Violins and violin making

Why is Cremona called the city of the violin?

Because the modern violin took shape here between the 16th and 18th centuries, in the workshops of the Amati, Stradivari and Guarneri families. That tradition has never stopped: in 2012 UNESCO inscribed Cremona's traditional violin craftsmanship on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Today the city has many violin-making workshops, where each luthier makes only a few instruments a year by hand, and it is home to an international violin-making school founded in 1938.

Where can you hear a Stradivari violin played live in Cremona?

At the Giovanni Arvedi Auditorium in the Violin Museum, which regularly hosts the recitals of the series “The Sound of Stradivari”: a musician plays one of the collection's historic instruments in a short concert. A serious trial often requires several days in the city.
